Obituary for Edward Francis Barger

Edward Francis Barger
Edward Francis Barger of Caledonia, Missouri was born on May 19, 1929 in Enough, Missouri a son to the late Stephen Barger and the late Ressie (Wiley) Barger. On July 1, 1958, Edward was united in marriage to Dorothy Meadows in Potosi, Missouri and five children born to this union.

Edward entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 surrounded by his family at the age of eighty-eight.

Edward will be missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of fifty-nine years, Dorothy Barger of Caledonia; Suzanne (Daryl) Brach of Arlington, VA.; Kurt (Kelley) Barger of St. Louis; Sherry (James) D’Amico of St. Charles; Julie Barger of St. Louis; Jennifer (David) Newkirk of St. Peters; brother, John (Ellie) Barger of Tampa, FL.; seven grandchildren: Erin D’Amico, Kelly D’Amico, Dante Barger, Ethan Chankin, Sophie Chankin, Jonas Newkirk and Irie Newkirk; also surviving are nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by five siblings: Marion Barger, Mildred Crocker, Pauline Scott, Thelda Crocker and Ilene Crocker.

As a son of a teacher, Edward always valued education. He received his BS in education from Southwest Missouri University and a Master Degree in Education Administration from SIU-Edwardsville. His Career was briefly interrupted by a two-year tour of duty as an officer with the US Army during the Korean War.

Although Edward’s work took him to the St. Louis area where he was both a teacher and administrator, his heart never left his rural roots, and retirement lured him back to his final residence in Caledonia. Edward enjoyed farm life. He loved taking care of his cattle. Edward was a dedicated member of the Potosi Southern Baptist Church. He was a volunteer for many events throughout his community. He was an integral part of restarting the Caledonia Fire Department. In addition, Edward was a longtime member of the Valley Lions Club. He was proud to have assisted in granting scholarships to area students. Edward played many roles in life—husband, father, grandfather, uncle, volunteer—but at his core, he was a teacher who loved nothing more than helping a child achieve their potential. Above all the great things that Edward accomplished, his faith in Christ and his family was most important.

Visitation was held on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at the DeClue Funeral Home. Visitation resumed on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 9-11 a.m. at the Potosi Southern Baptist Church.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Potosi Southern Baptist Church with Rev. H. Wayne Isgriggs officiating.

Interment and final prayers were held in the Caledonia Methodist Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were respectfully entrusted to the care and direction of the DeClue Funeral Home, Potosi, Missouri.
